Benefits of Bioinformatics and Health Informatics for Faculty and Students in Health Sciences

Bioinformatics and Health Informatics are highly integrative area in modem biology as information technology makes overwhelming biological data readily available to a variety of scientists, students, professors, clinicians and general population. Specifically, students may access biological data and utilize online bioinformatics and health informatics tools as part of classroom lessons. The field is unique, as it presents the potential to teach health sciences through actual first-hand applications.

According to Institute of Medicine report, the modern health care professional must have competency in informatics as part of larger goal to provide patient-centered care. Therefore, informatics is a core component of the “learning health system”.
